First edition. ‘An account of life in the Karoo, in the “Zwart Ruggens” country near Port Elizabeth. The writer accompanied her husband to South Africa in 1881, and they resided there for several years engaged in ostrich farming. Many details are given respecting the climate and flora of this part of the continent, and there is a good deal of information on the subject of ostrich breeding’ (Mendelssohn). ‘Hardly a big game hunting title per se, this little volume describing South African ranch life does include an interesting account of a wounded buffalo attacking a hunter’s horse, a springbok hunt in the Karoo region, and additional mention of hunting leopards and baboons’ (Czech p. 107).Hosken p. 136; Mendelssohn I p. 987; Theal p. 191.
