BUTLER, Josephine E.

Native races and the war.

London, Gay & Bird, and Newcastle-on-Tyne, Mawson, Swan & Morgan, 1900. Small 4to (195 x 140 mm), pp. [ii], 153, [1]; contemporary light brown half calf, gilt, top edge gilt, by Hatchards; spine lightly rubbed; bookplates of James Hamilton Russell and I. & F. W. Hosken. First edition. ‘An indictment of the Boers, referring to the methods of slavery practised by some of the Burghers, regarding their treatment of the natives officially and socially. Some evidence is brought forward purporting to prove that slavery existed in the Transvaal sub rosa up to the time of the first annexation, and was carried on after the retrocession under the more palatable term of “apprenticeship” ’ (Mendelssohn). ‘The object of this paper is simply to bring witnesses together who will testify to the past and present condition of the native races under British, Dutch, and Transvaal rule. These witnesses shall not be all of one nation; they shall come from different countries, and among them there shall be representatives of the native peoples themselves. I shall add little of my own to the testimony of these witnesses’ (pp. 1–2).Hosken p. 35; Mendelssohn I p. 235.
