First edition. ‘Arsène Isabelle, a French enthusiast of travel literature, decided one day to journey around the world. He fitted himself out elaborately for the venture, and chose the Rio de la Plata as a starting place. Accompanied by the son of a wicker worker of Le Havre, he arrived in March, 1830 in Buenos Aires, which was in the throes of revolution. The goods he had purchased for selling or trading purposes immediately proved to be absolutely unsuitable, and he sold everything at a great loss. Later, he started a candle factory, which he sold at the end of four years. He then resolved to start his travels, and journeyed across Argentina, Uruguay, and Rio Grande do Sul until [1834]. Isabelle’s book, in spite of having been written in the style of a literate businessman, is full of interest, and is of value concerning its Brazilian section. It is one of the few books of the time which describes journeys across Rio Grande do Sul. The author was a guest of Bompland, and in São Borja he met Joseph Ingres, the brother of the famous painter, who had established himself in business in the town.
