First edition. ‘An early advocate of Argentinian independence, Pazos wrote articles for La gaceta and El censor, spent several years in exile in England between 1810 and 1820 to escape Spanish authorities, and then returned to be a member of the Congress of Tucumán. He assisted Mariano Moreno in the revolutionary struggle. After the revolution, Pazos advocated democratic, republican government, a position that again forced him into exile in the United States and Europe . . . . A nineteenth-century romantic, Pazos was a brilliant political essayist and historian, focusing on political events in Latin America and the United States as his subjects’ (Olson p. 479). ‘Don Vicente Pazos, the author of the following letters, is a native of Upper Peru: much therefore, of what he describes, is the familiar recollections of his childhood, or the results of his maturer knowledge, and of personal observation.
