[MATABELELAND].
At the court of Windsor, the 18th day of July, 1894 . . . This order may be cited as the Matabeleland Order in Council, 1894.
[London, 1894.] Folio (315 x 205 mm), pp. 11; disbound. The Matabeleland Order in Council, 1894, defined the administrative power of the British South Africa Company over Matabeleland, which had submitted to the Company’s forces after the death of Lobengula in January 1894. Subsequent native rebellions and the infamous Jameson Raid caused the imperial government to remodel the constitution of the company’s territory (known officially as Rhodesia since 1895) and in 1898 a new Order in Council was passed providing for the future regulation of the country – the present copy of the 1894 order is endorsed ‘Revoked by O. of C. 20 Oct. 1898’.
