First edition. ‘This is a journal of a cruise during the period from June 8, 1850, to April 30, 1853. The author gives a picture of shipboard life, his duties as a naval chaplain [on the Congress], and observations on South America’ (Smith). The lithographed plates depict Rio de Janeiro and Catete.This is a presentation copy, inscribed on the front flyleaf ‘To the earl of Carlisle with the compliments of the author. London March 16th 1858’. George Howard, seventh earl of Carlisle (1802–1864, see DNB) was a Whig politician and sometime chief secretary for Ireland.
