Bellew of Dublin; gilt crest at head of spines; slightly rubbed, vol. I spine slightly chipped at head and upper joint repaired. First edition of this translation. Díaz’s classic work ‘covers the two preliminary expeditions along the Mexican coast, the march on Montezuma’s city, the flight of the Spaniards, and the final defeat of Guatemoc in his island-capital. Then follow the intrigues in Spain, Cuba, and Hispaniola, the march through the Honduran jungles and the final triumph of Cortés’ (Ward). ‘With regard to the translation, which is from the old edition printed at Madrid in 1632, we have acted up to the author’s desire, and have neither added nor taken anything away, and have attempted to follow the original as closely as possible’ (translator’s preface).Palau 72375; Sabin 19983.
