First edition. ‘Proctor was the agent for a British loan to Peru. He relates his arrival at Buenos Aires, his journey across the Pampas of Argentina, then over the cordilleras to Santiago and Valparaiso, and by sea to Callao and Lima. He describes a visit to General Bernardo O’Higgins and gives various particulars concerning General Simón Bolívar, General Antonio José de Sucre’s expedition, and other events of importance in the liberation of Spanish South America’ (Hill). Proctor was the cousin and brother-in-law of the scholar and forger John Payne Collier, who may have helped him with the text and ‘certainly negotiated terms with his Edinburgh publisher Archibald Constable on Proctor’s behalf’ (Freeman & Freeman, John Payne Collier: scholarship and forgery in the nineteenth century).Freeman & Freeman C1; Hill 1396; Naylor 16; Palau 238305; Sabin 65951; Sánchez 654.
