First edition. ‘Thompson was a southern lawyer who was active in sectional politics. He was a congressman from South Carolina from 1835 to 1841. He then served as U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1842 to 1844, and he disapproved of the Mexican American War. There is some discussion herein of conditions in California in 1844. This was a popular book, and there were six issues during 1846 and another dated 1847. Sabin states that later printings were issued without the leaf of dedication’ (Hill).
