A tract on the bands of Scandinavians, called Varangians, who travelled into Russia in the ninth and tenth centuries. The paper is founded on a lecture delivered at the British Literary Institution, Constantinople, in which the author claimed his chief object was ‘to identify them [Varangians] as a nation, and to determine their true origin and their relation to that race which, besides founding the great empire of Russia, has founded the free commonwealths of England, Scotland, the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Holland, Friesland, Norwau, and Liberia’ (p. 164).
