London, printed by John Field, 1652. Small 4to (195 x 150 mm), pp. 70; lightly soiled; disbound; edges untrimmed; modern boards. First edition. A detailed account of the negotiations between the English government and the Dutch embassy led by Adriaan Pauw. The negotiations lasted from 11 to 30 June 1652 and this account of the proceedings was published on 9 July 1652, the day after war was formally declared. In this last attempt at reconciliation the Dutch ambassadors attempted to explain the States General’s decision to increase the size of the Dutch navy (a move interpreted as threatening in England) and to convince the English government to revoke the 1651 Navigation Act which stipulated that goods could only be imported into England and her overseas possessions in English ships or in those of the country of origin. They also attempted to apologise for the armed clash off Dover resulting from Tromp’s refusal to acknowledge English sovereignty in the Channel by saluting Blake’s fleet. Among other grievances raised here is the execution of a number of Englishmen at Amboina by the Dutch East India Company in 1623.Wing E1511.
