GROTIUS, Hugo.

Historia Gotthorum, Vandalorum, & Langobardorum.

Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1655. 8vo (210 x 115 mm), pp. [vi], 148, 932, [98], with an engraved pictorial additional title; contemporary vellum, lightly soiled. First edition. Published ten years after Grotius’s death, this is a history of the Goths, Vandals and Lombards, printing the early – sixth to eighth centuries – accounts of these barbarian peoples by Procopius, Jordanes, Isidore of Seville and Paul the Deacon, with extensive prolegomena by Grotius. The Goths were thought to have originated in Scandinavia and Grotius had commenced this work in honour of Sweden, a country which he served as ambassador in France. Gibbon owned a copy of this ‘excellent edition published by Grotius of the Gothic writers’ and cited it in the Decline and fall of the Roman Empire (see ch. X, notes 4, 7).Meulen & Diermanse 735; Willems 1181.
