Amsterdam, Jacques Benjamin, 1668. Small 4to (205 x 155 mm), pp. 241, [3]; with an engraving on thetitle and eight half-page engravings in the text; edges untrimmed; contemporary boards, re-stitched. First edition in French of the Dutch ‘Kort en Bondigh Verhael, Van ’t geene in den Oorlogh, Tuschen den Koning van Engelant, &c.’ (1667). ‘This rare work may be considered as the most complete and authentic contemporary account of the war between Holland and England, the consequence of which was the final loss of New-Netherland, by the peace of Breda, 1667’ (Sabin). The Description exacte contains detailed narratives of the major events of the Second Dutch War, including the Four Days’ Battle, ‘the greatest naval battle of the age of sail’ (Rodger, Command of the ocean p. 72), the destruction with fireships of over 160 merchantmen lying in Vlie Roads ‘by far the most effective piece of English economic warfare against the Dutch in the three seventeenth-century wars’ (ibid. p. 76), the great fire of London, de Ruyter’s expedition to the West Indies, and the taking of New Amsterdam by Sir Robert Holmes (who renamed it New York in honour of the King’s brother, the Duke of York). ‘La première relation de la prise de ‘Nieuw Nederland’ (New-York) par les Anglais’ (Polak).With its attractive plates and detailed information this account is generally considered the ‘best contemporary account of the war between England, France and Holland in which the latter country lost New Amsterdam’ (Howes).Alden 668/43; Church 599; Howes K253; JCB (1931) p. 166; NMM V 761; Polak 2550; Sabin 38246–7 (first edition).
