First published 1879: an Oxford in Asia Historical Reprints publication. Vaughan was Superintendent of Police, first in Penang from 1851, and then in Singapore from 1856 until his death in 1891. His duties brought him into close contact with the Chinese communities of which he proved a keen observer.
