WHITE, John.

A voyage to Cochin China.

London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, 1824. 8vo (225 x 145 mm), pp. xi, [i, blank], 372; occasional light spotting; original cloth-backed boards; slightly worn; ex-library copy with occasional stamps. First edition. ‘A Voyage to Cochin China . . . is one of the earliest and most intriguing accounts of a journey to Southeast Asia. As Commander of the American naval vessel Franklin, White recounts his adventures during a trip to the Dutch East Indies Philippines, and Viet Nam in 1819 . . . . As a “mercantile adventurer,” his main job is to navigate up the Dong-Nai River to Saigon in order to establish commercial relations between America and Viet Nam. A detailed record of the problems with such a journey provides the outline of his voyage; a vivid account of his personal experiences provides its substance. White, in the course of his narrative, relates pirate chases, political intrigues, and financial chicanery’ (Nadel p. 347).Cordier, Indosinica 2426; Nadel, I. B., Journal of the American Oriental Society 96:2, pp. 347–438.
