MORSE, Hosea Ballou.

The chronicles of the East India Company trading to China 1635–1834.

Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1926–29. 5 vols, 8vo (225 x 140 mm), with 26 plates and maps; original blue cloth, light wear at extremities, a few corners slightly bumped, but a very good set. First edition: complete with the supplementary volume V, not always present, which comprises records discovered in the British legation at Peking after the publication of volumes I–IV in 1926.A monumental work, the scope of which is exactly indicated by its title. The English trade between Canton and London was preserved as a strict monopoly for the benefit of the United Company of Merchants Trading to the East Indies, commonly referred to as the Honourable (English) East India Company. From the Canton records, in which we have a graphic representation of the doings of the Company’s agents in China, every fact has been extracted which could be of economic value to the student of the commercial history of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
