First edition. ‘The determination of the British government to survey the approaches to ports laid open by the new treaty with China led to this expedition. Extensive accounts are given of Singapore, Borneo, Hong Kong, Macao, the Philippine Islands, Celebes, the Moluccas, Formosa, the Ryukyu Islands, Quelpart Island of Korea, and Japan. Mauritius and the Cape of Good Hope were also visited and briefly described. The natural history notes by Arthur Adams, assistant surgeon to the expedition, take up half the second volume.
