BURKILL, I. H.

A dictionary of the economic products of the Malay peninsula . . . With contributions by William Birtwistle, Frederick W. Foxworthy, J. B. Scrivenor and J. G. Watson.

Kuala Lumpur, Crown Agents for the Colonies, London, for the Governments of the Straits Settlementsand Federated Malay States, 1935. 2 vols, 8vo (225 x 150 mm), pp. xi, [i, blank],1220; [iv], 1221–2402, [2]; original navy-blue cloth. First edition. ‘The literature on Malayan Economic Products has become extensive: it has grown so large that it is difficult to use to the full even where libraries are well stocked, and is altogether out of the reach of those who live in remote places. Its disjointedness hampers every search for information: and there is need of a new guide to it. This Dictionary is intended to meet the need by collecting together and presenting in an ordered and comprehensive way the facts that have been recorded in a great variety of publications’ (p. v). Burkill, who was Director of the Singapore Botanical Gardens from 1912 to 1925, pays particular attention to the economic potential of the plants found in the Malay Peninsula. His dictionary is still considered one of the most authoritative works on the subject.
