BROOKE, Sir Charles.

Ten years in Sarawak . . . With an introduction by H.H. The Rajah Sir James Brooke.

London, Tinsley Brothers, 1866. 2 vols, 8vo (205 x 130 mm), pp. xv, 373, [3]; viii, [ii], 344, witha folding map and ten plates and plans; original green pictorial cloth; re-cased and slightly worn. First edition. The author was the nephew of the Sir James Brooke, who in 1841 had assumed the government of Sarawak and the title of raja. As Charles Johnson – he later adopted his uncle’s surname – he went to Sarawak in 1852 and ‘lived amongst the head-hunting tribes, the erstwhile pirates of Sekrang and Sarebas. By instinct a leader of men, his high courage and physical activity quickly won him the respect and attachment of this warlike people. The Chinese insurrection of 1857 was a test of the stability of the raja’s rule. It afforded a striking proof of loyalty on the part of his native subjects, and the timely arrival at Kuching of Charles Johnson with the Dayaks, who had readily rallied to his call, brought about a speedy suppression of the rebellion. During the latter part of his uncle’s reign, Charles Johnson acted as heir-apparent, and much administrative responsibility passed into his hands’ (DNB). Charles duly became raja on Sir James Brooke’s death in 1868 and lived until 1917, when his son, Charles Vyner Brooke, succeeded as the third (and last) of the ‘White Rajas’ of Sarawak.Turnbull p. 362.
