BOWDEN, Tim.

Changi photographer. George Aspinall's record of captivity.

[Sydney, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 1984.] Small 4to (220 x 210 mm), pp. 144, with illustrations in the text; small booksellers stamp on the front end-paper; original blue cloth; dust-jacket. First published earlier in 1984. Aspinall was a member of the 8th division of the Australian Imperial Force that was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. He succeeded in concealing a folding Kodak 2 camera in his clothes and smuggling it into the prisoner of war camp, where, using the most basic of materials, he secretly photographed and developed images of the prisoners’ daily lives. The photographs he took during the construction of the Thai Burma Railway would go on to provide valuable evidence for the Rabaul War Crimes Trial in 1946.
