OMAN, Sir Charles William Chadwick.

A history of the art of war. The Middle Ages from the fourth to the fourteenth century.

London, Methuen & Co., 1898. 8vo (220 x 140 mm), pp. xv, [i, blank], 667, [1, blank], with 24 plates; occasional light spotting; original maroon cloth. First publication of this version. This book, an expanded version of Oman’s Lothian prize-winning essay ‘The art of war in the Middle Ages’ (1884), was first published as a book in 1885. Oman published this present edition to include revisions and further developments in his ideas. It describes ‘the characteristic tactics, strategy, and military organisation of a period, and illustrates them by detailed accounts of typical campaigns and battles. There are also chapters dealing with the siegecraft and fortification, the arms and armour of each age’ (p. v). The work ‘held the field with few serious competitors until the 1960s’ (Oxford DNB).
