Probably first published in 1774, several editions of the Seaman’s guide were issued before 1800, all are scarce. For this, the only recorded provincial edition, ESTC locates copies at Boston Public Library, British Library, and Yale University Library.Diston, a pilot of Trinity House (which since Henry VIII’s reign had held the charter to regulate pilotage on the River Thames), also prepared a number of sea charts and hydrographic surveys. The frequency with which his Seaman’s guide was re-printed suggests that it was a popular and much used coastal pilot. Steele published editions of it and John Chandler re-issued it as The seaman’s guide and new coaster’s companion in 1788, this ran to a 24th edition in 1847.Adams & Waters 728.
