[WYLD, James, the younger.]

Wyld's map of the Baltic or East Sea, including the gulfs of Botnia and Finland and surrounding countries embracing the present seat of war.

London, James Wyld, [1854]. 550 x 700, coloured lithographed map; linen-backed as issued; folding into original cloth boards (180 x 120 mm); title in gilt on front cover, a little rubbed. A map of the Baltic, incorporating two detailed plans of Kronstadt and St Petersburg, issued at the beginning of the CrimeanWar. During this conflict, a combined British and French fleet was sent to the Baltic under the command of the distinguished naval officer, Sir Charles Napier. Cruising off St Petersburg in full view of the tsar, Napier imposed an effective blockade and managed to pin the Russian fleet in harbour. His activities in the Baltic put significant pressure on Russia and prevented Scandinavian countries, namely Sweden, from entering the war in support of Russia. In Some principles of maritime strategy (1910), Corbett mentions this particular campaign to highlight the power of naval blockade when well executed.BM Maps II 271 (1069.4).
