I bound in red crushed morocco, vol. II in black crushed morocco and vol. III in green crushed morocco; all with elaborate gilt borders enclosing royal arms, panelled spine with royal crest in top panel; gilt edges; a splendid set with fine plates. First editions of the first nine books in Cannon’s series of official regimental histories. A subsequent edition was published by H.M. Stationery Office with ‘much inferior’ unsigned wood-engraved variants of the originals.‘Cannon’s volumes were authoritative and readable, well produced and often well illustrated. If somewhat lacking in the human interest expected of modern historians, Cannon nevertheless set a standard for succeeding regimental historians to emulate’ (Oxford DNB).The books included in this set are:1. An historical record of the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards, or Oxford Blues: its services, and the transactions in which it has been engaged, from its first establishment to the present time. By Edmund Packe (1834). 3. Historical record or the First, or King’s Regiment of Dragoon Guards: containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in the year 1685, and of its subsequent services to 1836 (1837). 4. Historical record of the Second, or Queen’s Regiment of Dragoon Guards: (Queen’s Bays): containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in 1685, and of its subsequent services to 1837 (1837). 5. Historical record of the Third, or Prince of Wales’ Regiment of Dragoon Guards. Containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in 1685, and of its subsequent services to 1838 (1838). 6. Historical record of the Fourth, or Royal Irish Regiment of Dragoon Guards. Containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in 1685; and of its subsequent services to 1838 (1839). 7. Historical record of the Fifth, or Princess Charlotte of Wales’s Regiment of Dragoon Guards: containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in 1685; with its subsequent services to 1838 (1839). 8. Historical record of the Sixth Regiment of Dragoon Guards, or the Carabineers; containing an account of the formation of the Regiment in 1685, and of its subsequent services to 1839 (1839). 9.
