Paris, Ponce & Godefroy, engravers, [circa 1784 or later]. 4to (270 x 230 mm), with 16 engravings; occasional light foxing, but a fine copy in early nineteenth-century red morocco-backed glazed boards; gilt monogram of Marie-Caroline, duchesse de Berry, on the front cover. A fine series of engravings, with extensive descriptive captions, commemorating key events in the American War of Independence, especially those involving French forces. ‘The plates were engraved on copper from designs by Godefroy, Fauvel, William, Lausan, P. C. Marillier, Le Paon, and others. They are numbered and arranged in the following order: No. 1. the title, containing the “Précis” in thirty-two lines, and five vignette views; No. 2. John Malcom; No. 3. Journée de Lexington; No. 4. Sarratoga; No. 5. Prise de la Dominique; No. 6. Prise du Sénégal; No. 7. Prise de l’Isle de la Grenade; No. 8 Prise de Pensacola; No. 9. Prise de Tabago; No. 10. Reddition de l’armée du Lord Cornwallis; No. 11. Surprise de St Eustache; No. 12 Siège du Fort S. Philippe; No. 13 Attaque de Brimstomhill; No. 14. Époques de l’établissement des Européens dans les États unis [a map]; No. 15. Cartes particulieres [i.e. Floride Orientale, Desert de Barbarie, Isle Minorque, Isle de Tabago]; No. 16. Précis du Traité de Paix’ [an emblematic plate with descriptive text and eleven vignettes’ (Sabin; in our copy plate 7 is unnumbered). There are several issues or variants, one with a separate engraved title-page and with plates 6, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 16 unnumbered. Some copies are on large paper (that in the Boston Athenæum, described by Sabin, has only plate ‘VI’ numbered and plates 14 and 15 lacking, with the reference to them in the list on plate 16 erased).Howes C576 (‘First French book with a title-page mentioning the United States’); Sabin 68421.
