[WITHERS, John.]

The Dutch better friends than the French, to the monarchy, church, and trade of England. In a letter from a citizen to a country gentlemen. The second edition.

London, printed for John Clark, 1713. 8vo (200 x 120 mm), pp. 36; title slightly soiled; disbound pamphlet. First published earlier in 1713. A treatise, issued during the War of the Spanish Succession, advocating continued alliance with the Dutch. The author presents seven objections to this, namely surrounding the Dutch religion, type of government and behaviour during the conflict, and refutes each one in detail. As he states, his aim is ‘to disabuse the ordinary sort of people; to let ‘em see how grosly they have been impos’d upon by the partisans of France and the pretender; that so it may not be in the power of our new allies to make us fall out with our old friends, but that we may be united in affections, as well as we are in interest’ (p. 4). Withers’s tract was issued during the peace congress, which, after lengthy negotiations, resulted in the various treaties of Utrecht signed in March 1713. This congress had been organised by England and France, and the United Provinces had only reluctantly agreed to send representatives.Alden 713/190.
