[WALPOLE.]

The reasons of an eminent patriot offered in behalf of himself and others in the House of Commons, for endeavouring to procure an enquiry into the conduct of R---t, E--l of O--f--d; the obstacles they have met with in their attempts to satisfy the expectations of the people, and the resolutions they have taken to pursue the same measures in the next sessions. In a letter from a worthy representative of London to his grace the D-- of A---e.

London, printed for S. Lyne, 1742. 8vo (200 x 130 mm), pp. 31, [1, blank]; slightly soiled; recent wrappers. First edition. An anonymous tract, issued soon after Walpole’s resignation on 11 February 1742, demanding an enquiry into his leadership during his twenty-one years as prime minister. It is written in the form of a letter to the Duke of Argyll, a Tory who became a central figure in opposition efforts to replace Walpole. Although he too was forced to resign, ending his political career, soon after in March 1742. In particular the author criticises Walpole’s foreign policy. His disruption of England’s natural foreign relations through an alliance with France, his part in the Treaty of Hanover and the failure of Vernon’s expedition in the West Indies (by not providing it with the necessary support). It is illustrative of the attempts, led by Lord Limerick, to have Walpole impeached following his premiership.Alden 742/158.
