HOFLAND, Barbara Wreicks.

The young cadet; or Henry Delamere's voyage to India, his travels in Hindostan, his account of the Burmese War, and the wonders of Elora.

London, John Harris, [1827]. Small 8vo (170 x 110 mm), pp. xi, [i], 232, with six plates; occasional light spotting; original roan backed boards; a little soiled; extremities slightly worn. First edition published by Harris. A novel describing a young man’s voyage to India as a cadet aboard an East Indiaman and his adventures in that continent, where he joins the army and takes part in the Burmese War of 1823–26. Hofland (1770–1844), whose popular works ‘were frequently reprinted in Britain and America throughout the nineteenth century and often translated’ (Oxford DNB), wrote her children’s books partly as educational tales. Thus the Young cadet provides a simple but generally accurate description of India, its customs, people and history.Gumuchian 3061; Moon 376/1. NCBEL (3734) records an 1821 edition, but this is possibly mistaken as the dedication to Harris’s edition is dated November 1827 and gives no indication of a prior edition.
