"Non è esattamente sicuro quando questo scritto erotico di fama mondiale apparve per la prima volta. I bibliografi inglesi considerano il 1750 come anno della sua pubblicazione. Gay fissa molto vagamente la data fra il 1747 e il 1750. (...) Nel 1750 il libraio Griffith ne pubblicò una riedizione castrata e in un articolo della "Monthly Review" dell'aprile 1750 dice che l'originale era apparso circa due anni prima. Se si prendono in considerazione tutte queste dichiarazioni, risulta che l'originale è stato pubblicato con tutta probabilità nel 1749. (...) Nessun altro libro erotico è stato ristampato così spesso come "Fanny Hill", ma quasi nessuna traduzione riproduce il testo originale, e tutte contengono omissioni, mutilazioni e storpiature" (English 1967: pp. 720-721).
