E' in sostanza una cronaca scandalosa del regno di Luigi XIV, presentata con molta spregiudicatezza ma nello stesso tempo con incredibile grossolanità e cinismo. (...) Galanterie e vizi, malizie della nobiltà, sorprusi di sovrani e di cortigiani, tutto è esaminato con un intento satirico e aspro: se il primo intento era di scrivere un'opera per il trastullo di un'amante, Madame de Monglat, nel 1660, l'argomento andò ben presto sviluppandosi nelle mani del narratore come una vera e propria epopea degli amori e dei sotterfugi di corte, tra lussurie, calunnie, godimenti" (Carlo Cordié, in Bompiani 1959: vol.
