Uscito nel 1885, contribuì a consolidare il successo dell'autore, già affermatosi con "Malombra". Storia d'un amore fatto di tutte le concordanze di due anime, e ostacolato da tutte le forze che la legge morale può mettere in gioco. (...) "Daniele Cortis" resterà famoso anche per le discussioni e polemiche , di natura non precisamente estetica, suscitate al suo primo apparire, e delle quali si ridestano anche oggi, di tempo in tempo, gli echi. C'è chi accusa il romanzo di quell' "amor platonico" a cui si applica il "subtiliter fornicatur" di sant'Agostino. E sta di fatto che le critiche alla dubbia moralità del romanzo ebbero sul romanziere influenza tale, da persuaderlo a una specie di palinodia, in un compoinimento poetico edito nel 1891: "Eva"" (Piero Nardi, in Bompiani 1959: vol. II pp. 564-565). Prima edizione.
