HOUSTOUN, MATILDA CHARLOTTE FRASER

Records of a Stormy Life. By the Author of Recommended to Mercy.

London: Hurst and Blackett, 1879. First edition. Not in Wolff, who had several other novels by Houstoun; the NUC records two copies (DLC & OCI). 3 vols, 8vo, contemporary brown quarter calf, marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering. At the foot of each spine is the gilt stamp of the Murraysburg Library. ¶ An autobiographical novel by the prolific writer of fiction and travel literature. Matilda Houstoun traveled twice to America, once with her husband on a yacht, and her account of her second tour is recorded in Clark’s Travels in the Old South, vol. 3, 329. Her first novel, Recommended to Mercy (1862), was her most popular and went through numerous editions. Most of her novels had somewhat feminist themes (husband abuse, women who refused to marry, etc.). See The Feminist Companion to Literature. Fine copy.
