HOUSMAN, MRS [CATHERINE]
Observations on a Volume Recently Published, Entitled Perfect Peace; or Letters-Memorial of the Late John Warren Howell, Esq., of Bath, M.R.C.S.
London: Printed by W. Hughes, 1844. First edition. OCLC records three copies (Duke, LC and U of Miami, FL). 8vo, contemporary (probably original) dark green morocco, decoratively blind-stamped, gilt lettering, a.e.g. Frontis portrait and six plates (one colored). ¶ An uncommon and eccentric Victorian attack on the Newtonian system and the solar system as generally understood. Mrs. Housman of Bath, who published several other titles on similar themes (including such works as A Writing or Declaration from the Law Book, to Obliterate the House of the Revolver, or Solar System [1821] and Letter to Dr. Spry in Vindication of the Word of God Against Every Specimen of Scientific Opposition [1839]), here takes issue with the posthumous collection of letters compiled by David Pitcairn, Perfect Peace: Letters-Memorial of the late John Warren Howell (1844), which evidently gave credence to the belief that Howell may have supported the idea of the solar system--a view Mrs. Housman disputes, claiming she had evidence that Howell had supported her views of the Biblical cosmology, though Housman does aver that "we have found by experience, that the clergy, in general, are more strenuously devoted to the theory of Newton than any other class of society." Edges a little rubbed; fine copy.
