Portrait of Major James George Semple-Lisle.
W. Stewart, London, 1799. Stipple engraving, 140 x 112 mm.; slight embrowning in margins else fine,mounted. The famous eighteenth-century swindler, transported to Australia for his crimes, here seen in military dress. Semple (or Semple-Lisle) and his extraordinary wandering life as a con-man made for wonderful reading. At the zenith of his career he would have comfortably challenged for Barrington's crown as the most celebrated transportee.
This separately-issued portrait, illustrated in Portraits of the Famous and Infamous, (p. 262), was also used as a frontispiece to the second edition of his biography, published the following year.

All items are guaranteed as described. If an item is not as described, it is returnable within seven days of receipt, unless other arrangements are made. Full refunds are given only when items are received in the same condition in which they were sent.

We accept most major credit cards. We also accept checks in US dollars or Australian dollars, but may require that the check clears before we ship an order.

Prices of books do not include shipping, which will be charged at actual cost. Insurance will be charged at 1% of the total order unless you advise that you have your own insurance arrangments and that shipping is therefore at your risk.
