The treatise is divided into two parts, the first devoted to theory and comprising four chapters which discuss the inner conditions of streams, their rise and fall, velocity, and the stream-bed. The sixteen chapters comprising the practical part discuss the instrumentation and materials employed in water-works, water rights, strengthening the banks of rivers, deepening waterways, controlling an excessive volume of water, and the construction of scaffolding, bridges, ice-breakers, and placement of mills. This part also includes chapters on river transport, the construction of dikes and dams, canals, sluices, ditches, and drainage, as well as an appendix on the estimation of costs. Silberschlag (1721-91), a priest at Magdeburg and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin, wrote many books and articles on hydraulics, river improvement, technology, and related scientific subjects.
