A New Mathematical Dictionary: Wherein is contain'd, not only the Explanation of the Bare Terms, but likewise an History of the Rise, Progress, State, Properties &c. of Things, both in Pure Mathematicks, and Natural Philosophy, so far as it come Under a Mathematical Consideration.

Numerous woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text. [397] pp. (lacking the two leaves of ads at end). 8vo, cont. mottled calf, single gilt fillet round sides, spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: J. Senex et al., 1726. First edition. Stone (d. 1768), began to interest himself in mathematical instruments at the age of 12 and taught himself mathematics, Latin, and French. The Duke of Argyll, who employed Stone's father as a gardener, placed the youth in a position which allowed him to pursue his studies. Stone wrote a number of books on calculus, scientific instruments, and astronomy and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1725. In this work, Stone gives extended definitions of words in many fields including astronomy, architecture, fortification, instruments, mechanics, hydraulics, navigation, music, etc., etc. Fine copy.
