[DODS (Mary Diana).]

Tales of the Wild and the Wonderful.

London, Hurst, Robinson, and Co; Edinburgh, A. Constable and Co. 1825. First edition. Original cloth-backed boards, paper label. 8vo. pp. x, 356. Wolff 601; Garside & Schöwerling 1825.15. Described in the preface as "tales of diablerie", this volume of five short stories: 'The Prediction', 'The Yellow Dwarf', 'Der Freischütz', 'The Fortunes of De la Pole', 'The Lord of the Maelstrom', and with the notes to the final story was dedicated to Joanna Baillie. It was first attributed to Borrow by Walter Jerrold in 1921. However, the real identity of the author was presumed to have been discovered by Betty E. Bennett in 1980. She claimed it was written by Robert Lyndsay, a friend of Mary Shelley (see 'The Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley', Vol. 2. pp. 533-34). It later transpired that Robert Lyndsay was the pseudonym used by Mary Diana Dods. However this attribution is not entirely decisive as the author's preface implies that the work is by a man. Wolff suggests a comparison should be made between the style of the present work and the fiction known to be by David Lyndsay. Boards marked and stained, corner of upper board cracked, tears to spine, paper label torn with loss, nevertheless an acceptable copy of an important book in original condition. Preserved in a collector's box.
