Brodrick (1831-1903) initially practised as a lawyer but turned to journalism, joining the staff of "The Times" where he contributed over 1600 leading articles on political themes. In 1881 he was elected warden of Merton College, Oxford. This prize essay was his first publication. A very good copy.
