An account of the development of steam engines in England and Sweden is given on pp. 1–14, followed by the history and construction of steamboats in England (pp. 17–28) and a brief description of Robert Fulton’s steamboats and their construction (pp. 29–30). Development of the steamboat in Sweden is detailed on pp. 31–52, of which the greater part is taken up with the pioneering experiments and projects of the industrialist and inventor Samuel Owen (pp. 35–47). Samuel Owen (1774–1854), born in the village of Norton-in-Hales, Shropshire, England, was to become a central figure in the burgeoning of Swedish industry, most notably as a manufacturer in the Kungsholmen district of Stockholm. He received his greatest renown as a builder of steamships; he was the first steamboat builder in Sweden and one of the early international pioneers. In the years 1815–7 he experimented with a propeller-driven system but soon switched over to the principle of the paddle wheel. The first successful steamboat to leave his factory, the Amphitrite, was finished in 1817 and produced great excitement the following year when it began passenger services on Lake Mälaren.
