ABERDEEN

(Royal Burgh of) Document in Latin with translation signed 'W. Copland'

saying that “in the presence of the Honourable Provost, Baillies, Dean of Guild, and Treasurer of the said Burgh ... James Hay, Esq.,” 1777-1838, of Seggieden, 4 miles SE of Perth, “Gentleman, Cornet [‘Vexillifer’] of His Majesty’s Perthshire Fencibles Regiment of Horse, was ... admitted Burgess and Guild Brother ... on account of the singular favour and benevolence with which the said Magistrates embrace him”, vellum, 1 side 5¼” x 9½”, title on verso, Aberdeen, 10th July 1795, Cornet was the lowest rank in a regiment of horse, equivalent to Ensign in the infantry, both ranks replaced by Sub-lieutenant in 1871. Hay rose in the Militia, becoming a Deputy Lieutenant for Perthshire, 1803, and Lt.-Col. Commandant in the Eastern Regiment of the Royal Perthshire Local Militia, 1808.
