STRANG, John.

Necropolis Glasguensis; with observations on ancient and modern tombs and sepulture.

Glasgow, Atkinson and Company [printed by Edward Khull], 1831. Large 8vo, pp. viii, 72, with litho frontispiece and one engraved plate (both a little foxed); a fresh, clean copy in early 20th century cloth, brown morocco label on spine. First and only edition of one of the earliest English contributions to the cemetry debate. Strang's motive in writing this survey of funerary practices was to raise support for his proposal to convert Glasgow's Fir Park into a garden cemetery as a Scottish Père La Chaise. He gives details of access to the site by road, the building of walls and gateways, and a list of suitable shrubs and evergreens, with estimated costs, supplied by Mr. Murray of the Royal Botanic Garden.RLIN and OCLC locate copies at New York Public, Huntington, Metropolitan Museum, Chicago, and National Gallery of Art Washington.
