London, John Henry Parker, 1849. 8vo, pp. vi, [2], 93, with 88 wood-engraved plates (complete: frontispiece, plates numbered 1-83, and 4 bis plates); a very good and fresh copy bound in the original publisher's blind stamped cloth, spine lettered gilt, head and foot of spine minimally scuffed. First edition of the earliest comprehensive study on funerary sculpture of the Middle Ages in England. Edward Cutts was an Anglican minister and antiquary; from 1852 he was honorary secretary of the Essex Archaeological Society. This was his first published work.
