BAL 9641; Wright III, 2809. 8vo, original orange-red cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ A young woman, Annie Kilburn, returns to a small New England town after eleven years of living in Italy and immerses herself in local politics. Published just before A Hazard of New Fortunes, Annie Kilburn is one of Howells’ least common novels. The American and English issues were printed from the same plates by David Douglas, Edinburgh. Ink signature of Harriet Witbeck, March 9, 1889 on the front free endpaper and title page. Spine faded; cloth a little worn; very good copy.
