Two folding engraved plates. 88 pp. 8vo, attractive antique half-calf & marbled boards. Paris: Houel & Ducros, 1797. First edition of this classic and extremely rare work in the history of hydraulics. In this book, Venturi (1746-1822), postulated what is now termed the "Venturi Principle," namely that in passing through converging pipes fluids under pressure gain speed and lose head, and vice versa for diverging pipes. The Venturi principle is now very widely adopted for metering flows in pipes, tunnels, and channels. Very good copy. Kent, W.G., An Appreciation of Two Great Workers in Hydraulics (London: 1912), stated that only two or three copies of this "most interesting volume" still exist.
