Mauritius, printed by Baron & Souvignec, printers & booksellers to Government, Nov. 1816. 4to. ii + 32 pp. Contemporary red morocco gilt titled on upper cover, small stain on lower cover, extremities slightly rubbed. Inscribed by the author “Presented to Lt. Col. Leitch by Dr. Burke” “and by Colonel Leitch to Miss Finniss”. First edition of the invaluable catalogue of plants cultivated in Mauritius, “compiled under the auspices of the Governor, Sir Robert Townsend Farquhar” and printed on the island in the very early years of British rule. Upon the restoration of peace between France and England in 1814 the possession of Mauritius was confirmed to Britain by the Treaty of Paris. Sir Robert Farquhar was one of the most distinguished of the British governors. He did much to abolish the Malagasy slave trade and to establish friendly relations with the rising power of the Hova sovereign of Madagascar.
