Cet ouvrage du médecin et philosophe anglais Francis Glisson (1597-1677) est un des grands classiques médicaux du XVIIs. et contient plusieurs découvertes importantes. "First accurante description of the capsule of the liver (Glisson's capsule) and its blood supply. He also described the sphincmeter of the bile duct (Glisson's sphinter). This is the first book printed in England which gives a detailed account of a single organ based on original research" (Garrison-Morton). La première édition parut à Londres en 1654.
