Only edition of Johann Anton Tischbein's painting manual written for the benefit of his pupils who he taught at his drawing school in Hamburg since 1766. The publication of the present work and its favourable reception in artistic circles gained Tischbein the appointment of professor of drawing at the Johanneum, the most prestigious school in Hamburg.Schlosser/Magnino, p. 680; UCBA 1990.
