Buchbeschreibung

[MAFFEI, Scipione.]

De teatri antichi, e moderni. Trattato in cui diversi punti morali appartenenti a teatro si mettono del tutto in chiaro. Con la qual occasione risponde al P. Daniele Concina chi vien ora in tal materia cosi fieramente attaccato da lui.

Verona, presso Agostino Carattoni, 1753. 4to, pp. [8], 136, [3], with some charming wood-engraved head and tail-pieces and wood-engraved vignette on title; a fine, uncut copy in contemporary paste-boards, spine skilfully renewed. First edition. Maffei's defence of the Italian theatre was written in response to Father Daniele Concina's De Spectaculis theatralibus (Rome 1752) in which the cleric had fulminated against all theatre performances, secular and sacred. Maffei who himself was the author of a rather successful play, Merope (1713), takes great pains to refute Concina's argument. Maffei pleads for a rejuvenated theatre which should be as important to contemporary life as it used to be in classical times.Cicognara 763 (second edition of 1754); RLIN locates 5 copies: Getty, harvard, Berkeley, Chicago, and Rochester; no copy in OCLC.
