Marmor Sandvicense cum commentario et notis...
Cambridge, Typic Academicis excudebat Ios. Bentham, 1743. 4to, ff. [10], pp. 88, ff. [2], partly printed in Greek; with 2 large engraved folding plates (one wih small clean tear), 2 double-page letter-press plates and one engraving in the text, some red printing in the text; a very good copy in recent half calf. First edition. John Taylor, librarian to Cambridge University, produced the first account of this ancient marble tablet bought from Athens to England by John Montague, 4th earl of Sandwich in 1739.In July 1738 Lord Sandwich embarked on a cruise in the Mediterranean, he visited Athens, the Greek Islands, Constantinople and Egypt, returning via Gibraltar to England. He sent numerous coins and ancient artefacts back to England, the most important though was the giant marble tablet found in Athens. It was among the earliest inscriptions which contained an account of the contributions levied by Athens upon her allies. Lord Sandwich later presented the marble to Trinity College, Cambridge. The two very large folding plates reproduce both sides of the marble tablet, the two letter-press plates give the text of the marble in a more clearly arranged state. Navari, Blackmer, 1641.
