First edition of Ward’s last Silver Fork novel, published some fourteen years after De Vere, or, The Man of Independence. As a late contribution to the genre, it allows itself a certain reflective quality with regard to silver fork society, and there is a passage (reported, tongue firmly in cheek, by Alison Adburgham) in which ‘the hero tries to explain what it is that distinguishes nous autres of the haut ton. Finally he arrives at the unchallengeable definition – it is “that indescribable something”’. Sadleir 3297.
